Found A Popular Old Illustration

I found the following illustration in my notes from teaching Proverbs in 2006. This is one that people always remember and frequently remind me about. ;-)

I did not mean to create an illustration for Proverbs this week… It just happened
Yesterday… Came home to spend a little time with Kim. Thawed out some chicken… Then find out, she is not able to have dinner, she has other plans already.
So I have some thawed out chicken… I don’t think I can just leave it in the fridge… I’m a little lost, usually I thaw out the chicken, and then she comes home and seasons it and tells me how to cook it. So I figure I might as well try to cook something, the chicken is going to go bad if I don’t use it, and it is just me eating, so I might as well try. I'll try three different dishes.
First dish – Baked chicken with barbeque sauce and honey. Put that in the oven.
Second dish – Cook it in the skillet with barbeque sauce…Started that, looked promising.
Third dish - Marinate in soy sauce and cook it in the skillet...Did that last week.
Checked on the first dish in the oven... Realized I hadn’t turned the oven on. Turned the oven on.
Keep cooking the chicken in the skillet, put the rest of the chicken in a bowl with some soy sauce because that is what Kim did last time.
Second Dish – Barbeque sauce is popping and making a mess.
First Dish – It looked funny… I looked at it for a minute and realized that you cannot use saran wrap when you cooking in the oven.
Second Dish – Looks good, so I pull out a piece and cut it in half… I can’t tell if it is done or not. Couple pieces, still can’t tell. Outside is starting to burn, so I figure I will microwave it. Microwaved it for a few minutes… Now it is really chewy.
So I give up on that one and throw it away.
I’m down to my last dish.
It has been marinating, I did this a week ago and it was great, should be no problem.
By this time I am in a hurry because I have to leave soon…
So of course, I have the fire too high, the outside was burned and the inside was still not done.
So finally I got a #8 at Taco Bell.

God Speaks Through His Word

Today I was reminded of one of the reasons I love spending time with God in His Word every day. When you invest in daily reading of the Word, God speaks to you right where you are at in life!

This morning I woke up at 3am and could not fall back asleep. Too much on my mind. My thoughts were racing as I tried to comprehend and organize all that needs to be done in preparing for Easter. It's a big week. I've been feeling the pressure, and the spiritual battles. And my mind is working on several things at once all day long.

So at 3am my mind was flooded with all the thoughts, and I feared there would be no sleep for the rest of the night. Since I wouldn't be able to sleep, I started my morning routine, reading the Bible and prayer. Today's reading was Psalm 60-62, and God spoke to me through it!

Psalm 61
1 Hear my cry, O God; Attend to my prayer.
2 From the end of the earth I will cry to You, When my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

Psalm 62
5 My soul, wait silently for God alone, For my expectation is from Him.
6 He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved.
7 In God is my salvation and my glory; The rock of my strength, And my refuge, is in God.
8 Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah

As the Lord reminded me to trust and rest in Him, He quieted my mind, tucked me in, and put me back to sleep.

Completed: The Bible In 3 Years!

Today many of us have a great sense of accomplishment! We have completed the schedule to read through the Bible In 3 Years! This has been a blessed journey for us at CCLW!

So now what? Let's do it again! We will be following the Bible In 3 Years reading schedule again starting January 1st. Join us in reading a chapter or two a day to read through the whole Bible. The message I teach on Sunday mornings will be based on a passage from the reading each week.

The daily reading and links to additional resources for each book of the Bible will be available online. cclivingwater.com/read

I encourage every believer to spend time regularly reading the Bible so we will also offer a couple other reading plans for those who want a different pace.

Bible In 1 Year: For those interested in a faster pace reading three or four chapters a day to read through the whole Bible in one year.

New Testament In 1 Year: For those interested in a slower pace reading no more than one chapter a day to read through the New Testament in one year.

A New Season Begins

The past three years have been a blessed journey for us at CCLW! On Sundays we dug deep into the life of Jesus from the gospel of Luke. On Wednesdays we worked our way from Genesis through Revelation in an overview of the whole Bible. As this season ends, God has fresh new things set to begin.

Sunday Mornings: The teaching portion of our Sunday Morning Services is now going to be based on the Bible In 3 Years reading schedule. Each week Pastor Jerry will select a short passage to preach from the reading. Join with us in reading through the Bible In 3 Years again for the optimal Sunday morning experience.

Wednesday Evenings: Our Wednesday Evening Services will now be verse by verse teachings through books of the Bible. The service will also be structured to allow time to end the service with worship and one-another ministry. Ask God to use you in this ministry time each week.

A Blessed Conference!

image.jpg

Today was the final day of this year's pastors conference, it was a huge blessing. It was much needed, more than I really knew. God ministered to me and I needed it. The teachings were powerful and Spirit led. The fellowship was sweet and meaningful. The times of worship were amazing. The sleep was lacking, but I was refreshed anyway.

Below are some highlights from the sessions, or you can check out my full notes here... http://www.evernote.com/pub/pastorjerrys/takingnotes

Damian Kyle Highlights

• The past unity of CC depended heavily on one man's devotional life, the future unity of CC will depend on all our pastors devotional lives.

• We have to make sure that our definitions of success are Biblical, and not borrowed from the world

• Definition of success: Well done good and faithful servant

Levi Lusko Highlights

• The Father sends out His Spirit like a dove, hoping it will not return, but find a place to land in your life, in your marriage, in your church. Not just bring back a little branch

• Best part: when the dove landed, they got to get off the boat and see the rainbow. Storms are hard, but they give us opportunity to see the rainbow

Sandy Adams Highlights

• Pastors plant and pastor their church expecting, but those expectations may not reflect how God shapes our ministry

• Rejoice where God has you, even in the days of the small things. Zechariah 4:10

• How can you belittle the work that God is doing when Jesus continues to show up?

• Zechariah 4:6 - This verse was for a pastor in the day of small things fighting with wrong expectations

 Skip Heitzig Highlights

• Let's focus on being men in whom God can move

• A great leader will not abandon the past, but will learn from it and build on it

• Make what is important to God important to you

Alistair Begg Highlights

• The task of pastoral ministry is to say the same things again and again and again

• The ultimate issue with sin is what it does with our relationship with God

• Every sin is an inside job. The devil didn't make you do it. People do what they want.

Celebrating Ten Years Of God's Faithfulness

Ten years ago, May 23rd was a Sunday. Not just any Sunday, it was my first Sunday as pastor of Calvary Chapel Living Water! I am always blown away as I reflect on those days. I do not feel qualified for my role today, much less ten years ago! Yet God has been faithful.

Pastor Tom pulled me aside in February of 2004 to give me the news. He was leaving to start the Bible college in Okinawa. He believed that God wanted me to step up and become the Senior Pastor. I was freaked out and shaking as we talked because I was overwhelmed at the way God was fulfilling what He had been speaking to me. I was young and engaged to Kim, unqualified but called. And God has been faithful.

My ordination service was held the next month, March 28, 2004. The church did not yet know what God had setup to happen over the next few months. Kim and I were married on May 2nd and Pastor Tom shared the news with the church while we were on our honeymoon. This way the church could be free to freak out without worrying about hurting our feelings. Everyone was surprised. Some people were excited and happy, some were not. But God has been faithful.

I was 26 years old with 21 days of marriage experience as I stood up to teach that first Sunday morning. My opening sentence was, "Did anything interesting happen while I was gone?" Then we began the study of 1 Corinthians and worked our way through Revelation over the next seven years. On Wednesdays I picked up where Pastor Tom left off and taught Psalm 66 through the rest of the Old Testament over that seven years. For the last three years we have been studying Luke on Sundays and an overview of the whole Bible on Wednesdays. God is so faithful!

Ten years of ministry! That is 520 Sunday morning services, and 520 Wednesday evening services! Of course, I have missed a few. During this time I also taught chapter by chapter through the whole Bible three times, and will finish the fourth this year. I have officiated about 14 Weddings, 5 Vow Renewals and participated in about 20 Funerals. With all this experience, I still get nervous before every service. I'm still inadequate and not qualified, but God is faithful to His sheep!

God's blessings are amazing. His faithfulness is unending. God has taught me much, mostly that I have much to learn. One thing I know for sure, God is faithful! When I am weak, He is strong. When I fall short, He never does. What I do not know, He knows. This role is not about the amazing talents and capabilities of a person, but about an amazing and powerful God who works through normal broken vessels. It is a great joy and privilege to serve God and His people in this way!

Pastor Sosimo Avila

It was such a blessing to watch Sosimo's ordination last Sunday evening. As I sat through the service I began to think back to the early days with him. I remember him being 11 or 12 years old and coming to youth group with questions. He had questions because he had started to witness to sales people who would call their home. I remember him begging and begging to persuade Pastor Tom and Pastor Cisco to let him go on the mission trip to American Samoa even though he was too young. Sosimo has kept that intense passion for serving the Lord to this day so it is perfectly fitting to now call him Pastor Sosimo.
