Genesis 46, Why did they answer that they were shepherds?

Question: Also in 46 Joseph tells his brothers to say when Pharoah asks what is their occupation say it has been with livestock because shepherds were an abomination to Egyptians. So why in Chap 47:3 when asked they answered they were shepherds? Answer: When Joseph told his brothers to say their occupation was to be with livestock, he was telling them to say they were shepherds. The objective was for the family to be given their own land and not dispersed among the Egyptians. So it was good for them to be considered an abomination to the Egyptians. They received their own section of Egypt (Goshen) and were kept separate from the Egyptians. This is a key part of God's plan to establish them as a nation. -PJ
