Genesis 49:28, Why do the twelve tribes change?

Question: Can u please explain why and how the twelve tribes change? From gen to rev Answer: There are actually 13 tribes of Israel even though Jacob had 12 sons. This is because Jacob took Joseph's sons as his own (Gen 48). So when the 12 tribes are listed, one is always left out. The tribe left out depends on the context. For example, when talking about the land of Israel, the tribe of Levi is left out, because they did not have an inheritance in the land like the other tribes. Other times Ephraim and Manasseh are combined and listed as Joseph. -PJ
