Genesis 2:9, Tree Of Life

Question: Hello, Pastors! Thank you for taking my question. Gen.2:9b, "..'You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil...' " There was also another tree named: the tree of life. We are told in chapter 3 that God, "...placed a flaming sword that flashed back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life." God did not warn Adam and Eve not to eat of the tree of life, but only warned them about the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Was the tree of life just a "normal" tree that provide nutrients so that it sustained life or did it have the ability to give eternal life and God sent a guard around the tree to stop Adam and Eve from living in a perpetual state of sin for eternity? If the tree was just a "normal" tree then why sent up a special guard against it? If it has special properties of giving eternal life, then why didn't God warn them against eating it?

Answer: We do not have many details about the Tree Of Life, so exact or definite answers are really not available. It is mentioned in Genesis 2:9, Genesis 3:22-24, Revelation 2:7 and Revelation 22:1-14. Based on these passages, I conclude that the Tree Of Life is a tree with special life-giving properties. No warning was necessary for the tree before the fall, because man could live eternally with God in that perfect condition. After the fall it was necessary to prevent it, so that man would not live eternally in a fallen, sinful condition. Also, based on the monthly fruit talked about in Revelation 22, it seems that it was not a fruit that provided eternal life once eaten, but a fruit that sustained life as long as it was eaten. This is speculation, once I get to heaven I can give you the full answer. ;-) -PJ
