Well, this evening as we look at the Book of Job, I've titled The Message How to suffer like a righteous person.

How to suffer like a righteous person?

You know people respond differently when we get to this section.

Of the Bible in.

Three years as we're reading through.

Some people really get excited about going through the Book of Job, and some people really wish that we could just skip over this book and wish perhaps that it wasn't even in.

The Scriptures and I don't know where you fall in that range, but for me I I seem to just kind of grow in the appreciation of the book of job more and more every time I come back to it and for me I see it just as a a great reality.

Check for us and there's such valuable.

Truths and skills that we need that are modeled here in the book of job and it really hits home with some heart issues that.

We may not want to address many times in life, but are worth addressing and we need to address because we can't just live in a kind of a La La fantasyland, not all the time like there are some really difficult things that we need to wrestle with, and suffering is a reality of.

Life here on this earth, it's a reality of life as a result of the fall and the the issue of sin.

And so there are seasons where we will go through great pain and difficulty.

And you know it causes us to wrestle with these things more than when we're going through times of victory and blessings, right?

But there's the age old question.

Why do bad things happen to good people?

Why does it?

God, why does God allow this?

Or how could a God of love allow this?

Or, you know, put this in place.

In this world there's the problem of suffering that we have to wrestle with.

There's hard questions.

To wrestle with and to agonize over, also we see here in the Book of Job, a lot of bad doctrine and and the confrontation of a lot of bad doctrine, and so there's important doctrinal truths and things about God to wrestle with.

Here we see some really great example.

Of miserable comfort.

Years, and perhaps you've been a beneficiary of someone who has been very miserable at trying to comfort you, and so you can relate to job in that we see the value of friendship and the importance of emotions.

There's just we could go on and on about all of the valuable lessons that are found here now.

Many times we look at the Book of Job.

And our endeavor is to figure out, OK, how can I keep this from happening to me like I want to look at this to try to figure out how can I like sidestep and you know, ask God maybe he doesn't, you know throw me in front of Satan face whenever you know he appears before him and and how can I prevent this kind of thing?

Happening in my life.

But as we approached the Book of Job.

I would encourage you to change your.

Perspective and to look at it this.

Way look at job and learn.

How to survive as well as he did.

Learn how to handle situations and difficulties in pain and hardship.

In the example and in the model provided for us here in the person of job.

Now as we get started this evening, I want to give you a little bit of an outline of the book of Job, so you can consider it the 1st 3 chapters.

Give us Job's affliction and grief. It tells us the back story of what's happening in heaven. That job has no idea about at the time this interchange that happens between Satan and the Lord.

And it happens twice. First God gives him permission to remove all of Job's belongings and everything that he owns, but not to not touch his health. And then in Chapter 2 then, God gives Satan permission to afflict job with health issues and.

Those kinds of pains and difficulties and then in chapter three job cries out and expresses his grief there for us.

Then going on from there for chapters 4 through 37, we have the dialogue that takes place between job and his friends.

His friends come to comfort him hearing about.

The great trouble that he's experienced.

And so they all take turns talking to Joe.

Banjo responds, and then the next friend goes, and then Joe responds and it goes through these friends a couple times.

As they interact about their take and their perspective on the situation.

Then chapter 38 through 41 we have the dialogue between God and job.

Excuse me, sorry.

OK.

One second.

Alright, thank you God for proving Russell wrong.

OK, the dialogue between God and job.

Which puts all things back into perspective and then finally the restoration of job in Chapter 42.

So talking about job.

As a righteous person, we need to understand that job was a righteous person.

In chapter One, God presents job to Satan as a blameless and upright man.

In 22 of chapter one, it tells us that job did not sin nor charge God with wrong in all of the things that he reacted in what he experienced in Chapter 2.

God presents job to seeton again and says he's blameless and upright.

No one like him on the earth.

And then in chapter 2, verse 10, again it tells us that job did not sin.

With his lips.

And this is really important because there is very bad doctrine that teaches that righteous people do not suffer.

And there is the idea the.

Mindset that if you are walking with the Lord, if you are.

A person of faith.

If you trust God enough and walk with him.

Bad things won't happen to you and.

There is even.

The teaching there's an evangelism style that kind of centers around that core idea, and it's a it's a really bad doctrine that is not accurate because the reality is righteous.

People do suffer and you don't have to.

Just look at joke for that.

You can just look at the person of Jesus and that's always a great test of any doctrine is does it fit in the life of Jesus because he models for us the the Christian life and what we can expect as his followers.

Well, excuse me.

Hey, I think I got it that time. Chapter 42 though of job verse seven gives us God summary.

In his take at.

The end and it's important to consider.

And so it was after the Lord had spoken these words to job that the Lord said to eliphaz the team, a night my wrath has aroused against you and your two friends, for you have not spoken of me.

What is right as my servant job has.

Job friends.

We're some of the people who have the bad doctrine that righteous people do not suffer.

And it's interesting to have the book of Job in the Bible.

Because in all of the dialogue that.

Happens between Job's friends and job.

You can understand looking at God's summary here in verse seven of chapter 42. Generally speaking, any time Job's friends are talking.

The things that they are saying are deserving.

Of God's wrath.

It's false, the things that they are saying, although there are some Nuggets.

Of truth and pockets of truth.

And the things that they're.

Saying in the way.

That they're applying those truths to jobs life the the message they're giving is false and deserving of the wrath of God and God said in 42 seven. My wrath is aroused against you.

And so God here is confronting bad.

Doctrine, for example, eliphaz.

In job chapter 4.

Says whoever perished being innocent.

And he goes on this whole rant and rampage about.

If you were innocent then you wouldn't perish and only this kind of stuff happens to people who deserve to perish because they've been terribly wicked.

And so you can just pull out a a stamp and just put right over that chapter 4 nonsense.

Pretty much all of Chapter 4.

Everything he says, God at the other at the end says.

You deserve wrath for speaking that way to job.

Bildad his other friend and job Chapter 8.

Said, if you were, if you were pure.

Then God would awake for you.

Oh, I have cough drops.

I have one.

In my mouth.

I'm good, yeah, thank you.

You know, I was really good this afternoon.

I was like this is gonna be great.

I'll be able to teach no problem, but God just had to prove Russell wrong so.

But this other friend says essentially the same thing.

If you're a pure, then God would have rescued you by now and you can put a stamp on that and.

Say nonsense, most of what these friends say throughout the chapters is.

Nonsense Zophar says God exacts from you less than your iniquity deserves a job.

You're suffering really bad.

I know it's tough, but you know you actually deserve worse suffering.

So you should be grateful that it's.

Not as bad as it could be.

And that's not very comforting, so stamp it with nonsense.

It just does not belong.

It's bad doctrine.

The Bible accurately records the words of job friends, but what what, job friends say is?

Wrong, so why have it in the Bible?

Well, one reason is to help you develop a nonsense filter, because this kind of doctrine still goes on still exist in many people's heads and hearts.

Today and I will say to you that too many of job friends come to church and I'll apply it here.

Many of job friends come to living water.

This kind of doctrine and this kind of nonsense.

I have heard here over the years.

And not just long time ago in history past, but this kind of doctrine persists, and this kind of thought exists in people minds, and we need to understand that is not the way that God works.

And so this is a great book for us to learn how to suffer like a righteous person and how it should be.

So we're looking at job as a great example.

What's amazing about job is he responds so well, even though he doesn't know the back story of chapters one and.

Two, he's just walking along through life and then experiencing.

All of this.

It's great suffering and we can hardly imagine what it was like.

We can hardly imagine why it could be worth it.

But we believe.

That job is better off for all eternity.

Because of what God allowed here in the.

Book of job.

And you and I look at that would.

We'd say I'd rather.

Have a better life now and a lesser eternity and.

And that's exactly the problem, right?

For us to experience the life of job and to have a better eterniti sometimes is what is ultimately better for us and so 4 examples we want to look at.

And we're going to really focus.

On the closing verses of job chapter one.

Verses 20 through 22. Here's point, number one.

How to suffer like a righteous person?

Feel your feelings.

Verse 20 says, then job arose, tore his robe and shaved his head and he fell to the ground and worshipped.

Excuse me again.

OK.

Tore his robe and shaved.

His head what?

We have here are some expressions of intense grief.

Shaving his head.

Tearing his robe was an outward way of expressing.

His intense sorrow.

Some people give job hard time throughout this book.

But remember the context and remember what he has lost.

You perhaps, or people you know, have lost their home.

Or you or someone you know has lost their job.

Or you or someone you know has lost a child, you or someone you know has experienced painful disease.

But job experienced all of that at one time.

All you know.

One after another here in chapter one.

End 2

And so job experiencing all of this goes through this intense emotion.

'cause great.

Sorrow and incredible grief.

And throughout this book I see job as an example of.

Expressing that grief unto the Lord.

And the Lord being OK with that.

And so I want to say it this way.

God can handle.

Your expressions of emotion.

He might say it another way God can.

Handle your emotional outbursts.

God can handle.

You expressing the things that you're feeling.

Cries of grief.

You need to note that it's OK to cry out in.

Grief unto the Lord.

Complaints unto the Lord.

You need to know in times of great sorrow and intense emotion that's OK to take your complaints unto the Lord.

Questions are OK.

You need to know that as you go through suffering as you go through hardship and hurts and heartache that it's OK to ask God questions and and to be wandering and pondering and searching for answers and searching for meaning in the midst of it.

You need to know that ignorance is OK.

Just not knowing and and even.

Having some ideas and thoughts that are because of ignorance.

It's OK, there's a lot of ways that we respond emotionally to different things in our lives and and that's part of the way that God has made us.

God gave us feelings.

To feel them.

Feelings are for feeling they're not for.

Ignoring or, burying, or drowning or running from feelings are for feeling.

And some feelings are not as pleasant as other feelings, but.

Just as with the sense of touch.

You feel heat and learn to handle that.

Those painful emotions that we experience were to learn to handle them, not to absolutely completely ignore them and run from them.

And so here we see job.

Cry out in grief.

And it's OK.

He tears his rope.

He just complete.

This was a common.

Thing for their culture.

There too, to tear the robe.

It was an outward sign of intense emotion and mourning and grieving, and some people would come along and tell job job, you know, hey, you just gotta, you know, make the joy of the Lord your strength and you know try to just kind of gloss over and skip over the whole grieving and mourning process.

But but job here grieves out loud.

In front of everybody in public and at the end God still commends him and says.

Hey there friends, you guys misrepresented me.

Not like job job did OK.

He wasn't perfect and I'm not trying to say that job.

Was sinless but.

God did not rebuke job for crying out in his emotion.

In expressing what he was feeling and what he was going through.

He tore his robe.

He shaved his head.

That's interesting to think about.

How do you think that happened with him shaving his head?

We think he went and got you know, a nice razor and went and stood in the mirror and just you know went through that.

I I would suggest more likely he just went and broke a window, took a piece of glass and just started carving away.

Maybe not exactly like that, but like it wasn't like some measured perfect OK.

I need to be very careful.

And oh oh, there's no one, OK, I missed a spot you know that that's not how he shaved his head right?

He was in grief, he's Pete he's So what does that mean?

It was a rough shave.

There was probably some cuts and scrapes all over patches of hair left because it wasn't trying to be.

A style like hey.

You know I want to be like this cool bald guy now, and so I'm actually my no.

It was.

It was intense pain and grief and agony and so.

He would have been expressing.

These cries of grief while he's shaving his head.

It would have been imperfect.

And it was.

An expression of a declaration of how much pain.

He was in.

The cries of grief are OK and questions are OK.

In job chapter three, he starts.

His discussion.

He asked in verse 20 why is light given to him who is in misery and life.

To the bitter of soul.

Someone who's in so much pain as I am.

Why does God even allow us to continue living?

Job says.

Those who long for death, he says, but it doesn't come and search for it.

Who rejoice exceedingly on are glad when they can find the.

Grave those who are craving death so badly because they're suffering so much.

Why would God allow this?

He's asking God he's pondering he's trying to find.

Answers in the midst of his suffering.

Asking questions is OK.

It's not the same as questioning God.

Accusing God of love.

Ill will or or you know.

Bad motives.

It's not the same as questioning God, but.

It is OK to ask questions and don't to wonder and try to search for meaning and to search for what God is seeking to accomplish in the midst of a situation understanding of course that we may never get to know why.

In fact, for job he really never gets to know the whole story right until the very end, perhaps it's.

Job who writes the?

Book and so God gives him the insights of.

Chapter one and.

Two, we don't know how that came about, but.

He really doesn't get to know why in the.

Midst of this whole situation.

So cries of grief are OK.

Questions are OK complaints.

Complaints are OK.

Job Chapter 7 verse 11.

Job says I will not restrain my mouth.

I will speak in the English of my spirit.

I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.

And we could think wow, bad job.

You know, complaining shouldn't be complete, no grumbling, no complaining.

You shouldn't do that bitterness job you're not supposed to be bitter.

You know you're supposed to be better, not bitter, so be better and don't be bitter and we could try to counsel him that way.

What does God say at the end?

He tells.

Job's friends

You guys have spoken very poorly.

But but job he didn't speak like you guys.

And so, yes, he did complain.

Yes, he asked questions.

Yes, he.

Cried out in grief.

But God didn't rebuke him for any of that.

It was part of the process of him working through the feelings, feeling the feelings and working through the emotions of what he was experiencing.

Ignorance is OK. Also at the very end in Job 42, Job says.

I realize now all those things I said in those previous chapters.

God, you're not saying I deserved wrath for them, but I understand now I spoke things I didn't understand.

There were things too wonderful for me.

I did not know I I was ignorant and I spoke in ignorance and.

All of it didn't make sense, and maybe some.

Of it, I probably shouldn't.

Have said but but I I.

Spoke in ignorance.

I didn't know.

I I didn't have a full understanding but but again, here at the end, God himself doesn't rebuke job, for he doesn't tell job.

You need to repent of your ignorant words.

He doesn't say job.

You deserve wrath.

He says to the friends.

They deserve at right, but but.

If job, he maintains that job was an upright man who honored him.

And I think from that we can learn something really important and that is that God wants your honest communication.

Jobe did not offend God with his words, and God is not easily offend.

Did you know you or I might gasp?

You know, at some of the things that job says and say I can't believe he said that, and if it was said by someone in person next to us, you know we'd be moving away to not be struck by the Lightning too, right?

But the God is.

Not easily offended, God says, bring me your honest communication.

But whatever you're going through whatever you're feeling.

The point is not to try to not feel.

What you're feeling, but to learn how to express that to God and allow God to help you walk through those emotions and learn how to process them.

And of course we don't want emotions to rule our lives, but I would suggest to you that Jesus experienced the full range of human emotions.

He did.

He didn't just avoid them all he did.

He wasn't stoic and just I don't feel anything right.

He he felt the full range.

He processed emotions that that you and I experienced as well.

And under the empowering of the Holy Spirit and his fellowship with the father, he handled those emotions. He learned how to walk in the midst of those emotions and to continue in the father's will in spite of the things that he was feeling. And so there is a lot of lessons for us.

To learn about feeling our feelings.

And again, many times because they're not our favorite.

Things to feel.

We like to avoid them.

Or maybe we're like, ah, I don't think I should be feeling this way.

I shouldn't have these kinds of questions or complaints and so here's what I'm going to do.

I'm going to pretend like I don't have the feelings.

I'm just going to say praise the Lord.

You know things are great.

You know, even though I'm suffering and I'm asking questions and I'm I'm.

Just going to.

Pretend like I'm not suffering.

Pretend like I don't have those feelings because.

Well, I don't want to appear like I have those feelings 'cause I really don't think a person should have those feelings and I should be better off, you know than I am.

I should be more mature to not have those feelings, and so I'm going to pretend like I don't.

And this is one of the things that is really bad for us.

And and I think one of the things that is an issue for us as believers in the church is is putting on a show.

It's hypocrisy of a different kind than we're used to with the Pharisees, but but we like to try to put on the happy face and pretend like everything is OK and and it really buries the issue and we don't.

Address it and we don't learn.

To handle those things that we're going through.

What what God wants from us is a real and honest genuine relationship.

Now, I'm not suggesting that we spill our guts and our deepest sorrows to the Walmart greeter when they say hello, right?

I'm I'm not saying that we have to be that transparent to just empty out everything every moment.

But at the same time, now we don't have to try to put on this front and pretend.

You know, sometimes we might just get up and say.

You know, I I just.

I'm really hurting right now.

And my marriage is really suffering.

And maybe you're not my counselor, so I don't have to tell you all the details right?

But but I don't.

Have to pretend like Oh yeah, everything is great.

It's it's a plague I.

Think for us as believers many times.

Where there is the.

Hey, you know I'm too blessed to be stressed kind of mantra.

You know, like we're supposed to be blessed, and so I can't be stressed.

And so I gotta, you know, show up and put on a smile.

And I I can't show any kind of struggles or issues or difficulties and.

It's really unhealthy for us.

It's really bad and it doesn't represent God well.

Don't pretend that you don't have the feelings.

Feel the feelings.

And take them to God and learn how.

He wants you.

To step forward and process and handle and work out your life in the midst of those things that you're feeling.

But also don't run from feeling the feelings you know a lot of times what we like to do is distract ourselves. I was talking to a family member of Cisco's.

And they were talking about how it was kind of nice to have so many things to do around the Funeral arrangements because it was a nice distraction from the emotions that they were experiencing.

And I understand that I appreciate that and I can relate to that 100% at the same time.

We need to be careful that we don't just run and and do our best to avoid all of those things that we're feeling.

No, that doesn't mean we have to run in head on, you know, in every situation but.

We need to learn to not try to avoid those things and to just keep them off perpetually and do anything that we can to distract ourselves.

At a point we're going to have to face the music and feel all of those feelings, and so we can't run from.

Them we can't.

Bury them, of course, another popular strategy is to drown the feelings.

Or to drug the feelings and try to feel other things so that we don't have to feel the things that we don't want.

To feel right.

That that is not the way that God would have us.

To handle that again, looking at jobs example.

He tore his robe.

He shaved his head.

He cried out in grief.

He made his complaints to God, he experienced.

He walked through all of the emotions that were appropriate for the things that he was experiencing, but he did.

So in a way that honored the Lord.

And that caused.

Him to continue to be seeking the Lord.

In the midst of.

It and so how to suffer like a righteous person number one feel your feelings #2.

Submit yourself to God.

Submit yourself to God. Verse 20 and 21 says this.

Then job arose, tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshipped.

And he said, naked, I came from my mother.

's womb and naked.

Shall I return there?

The Lord gave.

And the Lord is taken away bless.

It be the.

Name of the Lord.

Take a note here in verse 20, job fell to the ground and worshipped.

After Messenger after Messenger after Messenger came and announced all of the great tragedy that has just befallen him.

He fell to the ground and he.

He worshipped now.

This may conjure up in our minds.

Being onstage here, you know he pulled out his guitar.

He put in his favorite CD and they still have those he put on his favorite, you know?

Pandora Channel Pandora is also right, he put.

On his favorite.

I can't think of any of the streaming services names.

There's a green one, Spotify.

He put on his favorite Spotify playlist and he worshiped right now.

That's not really what we should be picturing here.

When he fell down and worship.

There was probably no singing involved.

There was no song, there was no music.

There was no worship in that sense.

It was a different kind of worship.

Now, worship of course includes song.

But worship is really a status of our heart more than an audible thing that happens musically or otherwise.

The word worship.

It's the Hebrew word Chicago probably pronounced differently, but that's how I pronounce it.

It means to bow down.

To prostrating oneself.

To fall down.

To humbly beseech.

To do reverence or to worship.

It it essentially means this idea of bowing down.

That's the core meaning of it.

It's bowing down before someone who is deserving of honor.

Bowing down in humility in submission.

To God is what worship is really about.

Another dictionary defines it this way to prostrate oneself.

As an act of respect before a superior being.

And so, just as there is like the bowing down before royalty in some cultures.

It's that kind of idea that kind of picture of bowing down before God, and so when it says that he fell to the.

Ground and worshipped.

It is this.

Humbling of himself and submitting of himself.

To God.

He is bowing down he's worshipping, he is just giving himself completely over to God and you can see that very clearly in verse.

21 when he says naked, I came from my mother's womb and naked I shall return there.

The Lord gave.

The Lord is taken away.

Bless it, be.

The name of the Lord.

Job says my very existence belongs to God.

From the beginning.

To the end.

My existence is all because of God.

My life began.

Through no doubt no effort of my own.

The life that I've lived has not been because of me.

From beginning to end, my very existence belongs.

To God and all that I've ever had in this life.

Job says is what God is given to me.

And so if God chooses to take away the things that he's given to me.

That's his choice.

He gives he takes away.

That's up to him. I'm submitted to him. I'm bowed down to him, and if he doesn't want me to have 7000

Camels, and you know, so many sheep, and I forget all the numbers.

But if he doesn't want me to have this abundance.

Then he could take it away.

That's his choice.

I'm submitted to him, I'm his child.

Job here has submitted himself to God.

He's bowing down to worship not just in as an outward expression.

But his heart is reflected in his words, that he truly is bowed down and submitted unto God whatever God wants in my life.

I didn't have any say in my beginning of life and I'm not going to be able to take anything with me when I go.

I'm going to go back naked.

Just how I came.

It's up to God whatever God wants for my.

Life is what?

I want for my life.

I think Paul provides for us another.

Good example of this.

Remember in Second Corinthians chapter 12 he has.

The thorn in the flesh.

And it irritates him.

It bugs him.

And it it says that he cried out.

Three times to the Lord.

To remove this from him.

And the idea expressed there when Paul says that he cried out three.

Times to the Lord.

We may not just think of it as.

Like please take it away 1 Lord, please take it away 2 Lord please take it away 3.

But probably it's more like seasons of.

But please take this away.

And for dies or weeks or months.

He's praying, Lord, please take it away.

That's one.

He kind of.

Learns to live with that a little bit.

But later on that Thorn in the flesh flares up.

Again, Lord, please.

Take this away and here comes another.

Few days, weeks or months.

Lord, please take this away and.

Perhaps it dies down a little bit, and then the third time flares up again.

He played.

Please take this away.

And in that.

Third season of asking God to take away this thing that bothers him so much.

The Lord tells him my Grace is sufficient for you.

My strength is made perfect in weakness.

Therefore most gladly I will rather.

Boast in my infirmities.

That the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Notice the change that Paul experiences.

Or take it away, take it away.

Take it away.

Until God says Paul, here's what I'm doing.

My Grace is sufficient.

My strength is made perfect in weakness.

And so Paul says, OK?

I'll readjust my thinking I'm submitting to the Lord, OK, bring on the weakness so that God.

Can be magnified and glorified that God.

Grease can be poured out abundantly that his strength can be demonstrated in my life.

I'll boasted my infirmities rather than trying to run from them.

Keep them, take them out of my life.

I'll embrace those infirmities.

That the power of Christ may rest upon me.

You know, I could think, well I'd be a much better teacher if I could breathe and talk without having to cough and.

Lose my voice and God says, well, you know.

What if I take all that away and.

And perhaps you'll bring forth something even better, because my strength would be made perfect in weakness.

Not that this is a perfect message, but you get the point.

Submit yourself to God.

Paul hearing from the Lord corrected his thinking.

And he said, OK Lord, if that's the way that you want to run, I'm going to run with you.

I'll embrace weakness.

I'll embrace those infirmities in my life so that you can be magnified through them.

Similar to job.

He falls down and he worships.

He says, Lord whatever you want, this is your life as much as it is my life or even more, I'm yours.

I you brought me in, you're taking me out and your time in between that's up to you as well I'm yours.

He was fully submitted to God.

FB Meyer says this story is very comforting because we see that we're not.

The sport of chants.

But in every detail our education is being carried out by our father's hand.

Our dearest friends may advise us to renounce God and die.

But in Gethsemani our Lord taught us.

To take the father's will at all costs again.

Take any doctrine and put it in.

The life of Jesus and you get.

A good test for whether or not.

It's good doctrine.

Submitting yourself to God at all costs whatever God wants, that's what Jesus did.

He taught us to.

Take the father's will no matter what.

It costs no matter how much it hurts.

To submit ourselves to the will of the father and walk in the path that God has set before us with the promise, the understanding that there is joy on the other side, it will be worth it.

There will be.

Reward as a result, it will make sense later on in eternity.

In the meantime, we walk by faith and not by sight, and we submit ourselves to God.

Well, similar to that point, #3.

How to suffer like a righteous person?

Set your focus on eternity looking still at verse 21, Job says naked. I came from my mother's womb and naked.

I shall return there.

The Lord gave the Lord is taken away.

Bless it.

Be the name.

Of the Lord.

Job focus.

Is on eternity.

He looks backwards in time and he says, you know there isn't time.

I didn't exist and when I showed up I showed up naked.

I didn't have, you know, a bunch of resources I didn't have my own strength.

I didn't have anything.

I came completely empty and naked.

And where I'm headed.

I'm going to leave this life.

In a similar fashion, I don't have a lot to say.

About how it ends.

I don't have a lot to say about what I get to take with me or what attributes I'll carry on with me.

I came in naked.

And I'm going out naked.

He's setting his eyes on eternity beyond this life and again, Paul the Apostle sets a good example for us.

In his own time of suffering in.

2nd Corinthians 4.

He describes his affliction as light, which, if you read the chapter, his affliction was not really light.

But in his perspective, he's esteeming it lightly because he says it's, but for a moment.

And it's working for us a far.

More exceeding and eternal weight of glory.

Well, we do not look.

At the things which are seen.

But at the things which are not seen, but the things which are seen are temporary.

But the things which.

Are not seen are.

Eternal so Paul says, here's what we're doing.

We're suffering.

But we're in light of eternity understanding this affliction to be light because what it's working for us is something far greater in eternity, and so we're staying focused on those things.

Because the eternal things are temporary and if we just focus on this life and the things that we can touch and taste and experience in this life, those things are temporary.

They're not going to last.

And so when all those things are taken away.

Well, there were temporary things to begin with, and so yes.

We perhaps hoped to hold on to them for a little bit longer.

We perhaps hoped to experience those temporary things for a longer temporary period, but they were temporary anyways.

But the things that are not seen are.

And so we need to set our focus on.

We brought nothing into this world and we can take nothing out of it.

The real focus and the real good and all the fulfillment of all the promises that God wants to give to us.

They're going to be fulfilled in eternity.

In fact, much of.

What you read?

In Job's words and his friend's words, again. As I said, there's a lot of that doctrine as his friends are speaking.

But there is elements of truth and and especially so if you factor in eternity to some of their arguments and the things that they're saying that there will be justice in the end in all of eternity, and some of the arguments that they make.

They're not factoring in eternity and so that's why they're deserving of God's wrath, but but when you understand when you set your eyes?

Money Trinity and you understand God will make things whole.

He will make all things right and in the end the righteous do not suffer because for all of eternity they receive the benefit and the reward for the things experienced in this life.

Then then in that light, oh, there's a greater understanding.

But you have to set your focus on eternity to be able to grab hold of those truths and receive those promises, and have your hopes set on those things.

I like this quote from Francis Anderson.

He says job exclamation.

Is the noblest expression to be found anywhere of a man joyful acceptance?

Of the will of God.

As his only good.

Man may stand before God stripped of everything that life has given him and still lack.

You give and you take away.

I came in naked I'm leaving naked.

He says it's the most noble expression anywhere.

Of accepting the will of God.

Say I've lost everything but Lord my everything is really you and I haven't lost you.

And so bless it, be the name of the Lord.

It's a real mark of faith in the life of job.

Well, we're going to finish it up point #4

To meet with your God.

How to suffer like a righteous person feel your feelings.

Don't run from them.

Don't bury them.

Don't drown them.

Feel them.

Learn how to process those.

Take them to the.

Lord and and.

Walk through those feelings with God and let him teach you how to experience those and respond to those in your life.

Submit yourself to God.

Accept his will.

Accept his plans.

Bow down before him.

And allow God to be the Lord of your life and set your focus on eternity and trust that in eternity all things will be made right.

All things will be made well.

And there will.

Be great reward for what we endured for what.

We experienced and.

What we do in the name of the Lord and for God so.

With that, we come now to the .4.

Seek to meet with your God. Verse 21 again and he said naked. I came from my mother's womb.

Naked shall I return there?

The Lord gave the Lord is taken away.

Bless it be the name of the Lord.

And all this job did not sin, nor charge God with.

Seek to meet.

With your God.

It's not.

Explicitly stated here in these verses that job is seeking to meet with God.

But again, his behavior and his words tell us.

His desire was to meet with God.

You can see as you read this chapter in the following chapters, all the.

Way through the end.

Job did not run from God.

Having experienced great pain.

There are many people who have become angry with God and bitter against God and so have decided I want nothing to do with God and they push God away.

They run away from God.

They you know just completely tune out anything of the Lord.

Job did not do that.

He did not run from God.

He did not begin to hate God or fight against God.

He didn't start to rebel against God and tried to go violently into, you know, a life of of sin and rebellion against the things.

Of the Lord.

He didn't give up on trusting God.

In verse 21.

He said, bless it, be the.

Name of the Lord.

Bless it, be the name of the Lord he sought to maintain his relationship with God.

And in verse 21, it tells us that he didn't sin or charge God with wrong. He didn't say, OK, that's.

It I'm I'm just I have no care for any kind of relationship with God any longer.

He he maintained his relationship with God in the midst of the suffering that he was experiencing.

It's important to note Setons objective in all of this, and verse 11 here of chapter one.

Satan accuses job and says stretch out your hand and touch all that he has and he will surely curse you to your face.

Understand that Satan's objective was not to take Joe's possessions.

That wasn't the goal.

He wasn't just like there's going to be so much fun, and I'll accomplish what I want by just taking away all of his sheep and camels and.

Then I'll be happy.

That that was just a means.

To the end desire that he had, which was he wanted job to curse God to his face.

Now when you think about this idea of cursing God, even in Chapter 2, right?

Jones wife says curse God and I right?

Don't think of it in the sense of curse as we might say like a curse word.

This isn't like a explicit expletive expletive.

It's not like.

A1 moment.

One sentence kind of thing that is being talked about when it's been when it's talking about cursing God.

Cursing God is rebelling against God, hating God, wanting nothing to do with God, and running away from God, fighting against God and resisting God.

Like for your life.

What job is trying to do or what scene was trying to do is not to get job to say.

A bad word one time.

Satan was trying to get job to turn his back on God completely and to never have fellowship with God again. So that job would spend eternity in hell. That's always Satan's objective.

So you know flat tire Satan's objective is not to get you to say a curse word 'cause you had a bad time. You know that day and your tire got flat.

No, his objective is to use that situation to provoke you to hate God and turn against God and spend eternity apart from God as a result of your cursing of God and your hatred of God.

And so don't think of it as like you know, if you slipped up and said a bad word, well now that's it, that's the end.

But that's not, that's not what's happening here.

All of this was just a tactic of the enemy to try to.

Accomplish his real goal.

Which was Job's eternal destruction.

And Joe wouldn't have it.

All of this taken away, he says.

I'm still going to meet with God.

Bless it, be.

The name of the Lord.

I'm not going to charge God with wrong.

I'm not going to sever my.

Relationship with God.

I'm going to continue to trust him and submit my life to him.

No matter what.

Happens to me in this life now. As you followed Job's journey throughout the rest of the book.

I did a quick survey of the coming chapters.

I think pretty much every time job talks throughout the rest of his discourse is recorded here.

He speaks in some way of his desire to meet with God.

In job Chapter 9.

Job says he's not a man that as I am, that I may answer him, or that we should go to court together.

Nor is there any mediator between us who meet lay his.

Hand on.

Us both he's expressing.

The difficulty has because he wants to meet.

With God but.

He finds it hard because he's not just like a guy.

He can go find or, you know he can get a meteor and go.

To court and.

Settle this, he's like.

How do I?

Meet with God in the midst of this.

I don't know how to meet with God.

There's not this mediator who can interact for us and and speak what what's happening here I I'm not hearing from God.

And and there's this relationship that's missing.

Or there's this communication that's missing.

But again, it's job expressing I want to meet.

I'm trying to meet with God and if there was a way for me to have a mediator, I would take that because I want to go and have a discussion with God about what's happening in my life.

Again, he's not abandoning God or running away from God.

He's seeking to to find.

God to meet with God in the.

Midst of all of this.

In job 13.

Verse 20 Job says only two things.

Do not do to.

Me then I will not hide myself from you.

Withdraw your hand far from.

Me, that's don't do that.

And let not the dread of you make me afraid then call, and I will answer or let me speak, and you respond to me, God here's here's what I'm desiring.

Don't hide yourself.

I I don't want you to withdraw your hand I I don't want you to make the the dread of you in my life so much that I'm afraid to approach you.

No God, here's what I want.

Call call to me and I want to answer you.

Let let's have.

A dialogue, let's talk about what's going on in my life.

I don't understand it and it's hard.

And it's painful but God, I'm not abandoning you.

I'm seeking to meet with you.

I want to hear from you.

And I know.

That that's what I need the most.

In job 19.

He says, for I know that my Redeemer lives and he's he shall stand at last on the earth.

Right?

And after my skin is destroyed this I know that in my flesh I shall see God.

In the midst of all of this, he's he's maintaining his faith.

I know my Redeemer lives, I know he will have the last say I will see God I.

I'm gonna press on I'm gonna meet with God I don't know what's happening here in this part of life and it's really terrible and awful and and feels worse.

Than I could imagine.

But I know in the end I will see God.

I will meet with God.

And he has.

This ever before him he's desiring to meet with the Lord. Job 23 all that I knew where I might find him.

That I might come to his seat, I would present my case before him and fill my mouth with arguments I would know the words when she would answer me and understand what he would say to me.

I wish I wish.

I had I knew where I could go find if there was a place I could just go.

You know, sit.

In this corner or go, you know, spend some time under that tree and and and meet with God all I would do.

I really want to hear from God and talk to God about the situation and and find out what he says about it.

I want to understand from his perspective.

And finally, job 30.

Speaking to God directly, he says, I cry out.

To you, but you did not answer me, I stand.

Up and you regard me.

But you have become cruel to me.

With the strength of your hand, you oppose me.

He's talking to God.

I'm crying out to you, God.

But I'm not hearing any response.

Throughout all of this.

You can see the.

Heart of Job he was seeking.

To meet with God he was desiring.

To know God to hear from God.

To receive from God and in the end, as you follow along his journey, what finally satisfied job.

It was the presence of God.

God showed up in the closing chapters.

And and in those closing chapters, God didn't give a lot of explanation.

He asked questions instead.

God didn't give a lot of answers.

But it was the presence of God at the end that satisfied Jove.

The presence of God is what we need.

The most not the restoration of our health, not the restoration of our finances.

Not the restoration of this or that right.

What we need most.

Is that experience in the presence of God that walk with him that fellowship with?

And so here we get great examples from job how to suffer?

Like a righteous person.

Feel your feelings.

Submit yourself to God.

Set your focus on eternity.

And seek to meet with.

Your God, this is important truths for us and we need to be careful not to just be light and fluffy surface believers.

Let's really have a.

Deep and full understanding in life.

There is the reality of suffering.

There is hurt.

There is pain, and there's hurt and pain that we will experience that goes beyond what we knew was even possible to experience.

But in the midst of it, God hasn't abandoned us.

He's not done with us.

He wants to work in our lives and part of that is for us to learn how to feel and experience those things.

To learn how to submit to him in the midst of the situation, to learn how to look beyond the immediate things that we're going through and to see eternity, and to put our faith in our trip, our trust and and have that anchor of hope.

That holds us fast.

In the midst of the storm that we experience.

Because we endeavor with all of our heart to meet with God, to know him.

I know my Redeemer lives.

And in the end, I'll see him.

I'll stand with him on that day, and that is what matters.

Let's pray.

God, I pray that you.

Would teach us let this example of.

Job resonate in our hearts.

More and more.

What, as we experience different things as we walk?

In the different seasons that you allow for us in this life, Lord, may we.

See this as a model for us.

To handle things well in a way that honors you.

Lord, to honor you in the way that we feel things in the way that we express our emotion in the way that we do not hide and pretend like we don't feel things.

It would help us to honor you.

In the way that we put you first and desire to meet with you, help us to honor you in the way that we submit ourselves to you and our perspective on life.

And things in this life and the temporariness of it.

Could help us to honor you.

To handle suffering, difficulty, pain and affliction.

In a way that brings glory to your name in a way that represents you well.

Like you did.

Modeling for us at the cross.

Suffering as a righteous person, Lord, we don't want to suffer.

We don't like it.

It's hurtful.

It's painful.

And we wish we could avoid it.

But Lord, we fully trust you.

And learn if we need this suffer if we need.

To feel these things.

Lord, we

We say OK.

We surrender to you.

Work your will and your plan.

We trust you Lord, we know that you love us.

We know that it.

Will be worth it in the end.

And so Lord, we.

Embrace you.

No matter what that costs.

We love you Lord.

Because we know that you first loved us.

Help us to live that out even.

In the midst of suffering, I pray this in Jesus name.
