Genesis 20, What is Sarah's role in this deception?

Question: Hi, PJ, in chapter 20 Sarah is again married off to someone else. I know the culture was very different then, but what is Sarah's role in this deception? Is it biblical for her to just remain quiet and go along with Abraham. Answer: The culture was very different and these marriages are not like our marriages today. Consider how Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines (1 Kings 11:3). Both times this has happened it has been with rulers of the area, so this marriage is probably more political than personal. Sarah was definitely involved in the deception, as Abimelech recounts her testimony to God in Genesis 20:5, "even she herself said, 'He is my brother'." The Bible here records what took place, but never commends Sarah for this action. Sarah is actually rebuked by Abimelech for her part in the deception in Genesis 20:16. -PJ
